HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dylan Coleman drew a two-out walk and scored on a monster home run, estimated at 433 feet, by Hayden Cooper to left on a 3-1 count. Starting pitcher Drake Fontenot recorded three strikeouts and stranded a Shorter baserunner in the bottom of the first. 2-0 Delta State after one.
  • The Statesmen picked up two more hits from Taylor Woodcock and Wes Warnock in the top of the second, but the inning ended when Matthew Nichols, who reached on a fielder's choice, was tagged out at home. Shorter recorded their first hit in the second, but the baserunner was erased after getting caught in a rundown between second and third base. Delta State added another run in the top of the third after a Coleman double to the leftfield wall came around to score on a Cooper RBI single to right-center. 3-0 Delta State after three.
  • The Statesmen went in order in the fourth after a pair of tough defensive plays by the Hawks. Shorter left one on base after a one-out hit in the bottom of the fourth. Delta State again went in order in the fifth. Shorter plated their first run of the game in the fifth on a leadoff triple that came around to score on a throwing error on the same play. 3-1 Delta State after five.
  • Coleman was stranded at third in the top of the sixth after a leadoff double. Fontenot struck out two as the Hawks went in order in the bottom of the sixth. 3-1 Delta State after six.
  • Brendan McCauley singled to start the seventh and moved to third on a Woodcock single. Nichols singled up the middle to plate McCauley and again put runners at the corners with no outs. Nichols stole second and moved to third when Woodcock scored on an RBI single by Wes Warnock. Brett Burrell drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Coleman flew out to left, allowing Nichols to score. Warnock tagged up from second on the play and scored on a throwing error that also moved Burrell to third. Blayke Dendy singled up the middle with two outs to score Burrell from third. Dylan Dendy and McCauley drew walks to load the bases, followed by a walk to Woodcock to plate the sixth DSU run of the inning. The Hawks had four baserunners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs. 9-3 Delta State after seven.
  • Warnock singled to start the eighth and moved to third with no outs on a double by Burrell. Coleman singled to score Warnock and move Burrell to third in time to score on a sac fly by Cooper for his fourth RBI. Shorter put two on base, but a double play and a flyout ended the scoring threat. 11-3 Delta State after eight.
