CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University women's soccer team fell 3–1 to Lee at McCool Stadium. The Lady Statesmen dominated much of the second half, out shooting the Flames 12–2 after halftime and controlling possession throughout the closing 45 minutes.
After Lee took a 2–0 lead into the break, Delta State came out energized and aggressive. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when the Lady Statesmen broke through, taking advantage of an own goal, following a series of corner kicks that kept the Lee defense under pressure. DSU earned six second-half corners and forced the Lee goalkeeper to make eight saves as they pressed for a comeback.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Piper Burgess anchored the back line with a composed performance, while defenders
Ava Steven and
Ava Webster contributed both offensively and defensively—each registering multiple shots on goal to test the keeper.
Midfielder
Mariela Dolan led the attack with four total shots, keeping the Lee defense busy throughout the match.
The Lady Statesmen move to
5-5-4 (4-3-3 GSC) on the season and will hit the road this weekend as they will travel to Valdosta, Ga., to take on the Blazers from Valdosta State University. That match will kick off Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CDT).
