CLEVELAND, Miss. — A pair of goals from
Alfie Lally powered the Delta State University men's soccer team to a thrilling
2–1 Gulf South Conference win over Lee University on Monday afternoon at McCool Stadium. The win marks an impressive showing for the Statesmen, who controlled the pace throughout and delivered a clutch finish in the closing minutes.
Lally opened the scoring in the
17th minute when he calmly converted a penalty kick after a Lee foul in the box, giving DSU an early edge. Lee equalized midway through the first half, but the Statesmen defense held firm from there, led by
Logan Funk,
Micah Soper, and
Eduardo Guevara, who frustrated the Flames' attack for the remainder of the match.
The match remained level until the
88th minute, when Lally struck again — burying the game-winner on a free kick from 25-yards out to send the home crowd into celebration. His late goal sealed the victory and completed his brace, giving him two goals on the day and three on the season.
Goalkeeper
Mason Baglio delivered a stellar outing between the posts, recording
five saves while anchoring a composed defensive unit.
Braden Taylor added three shots and continued to create chances in midfield, while
Matthew Nicklas came off the bench to provide key energy and two shots on target during the Statesmen's attacking push.
With the victory, Delta State improves to
2-9-2 overall and 1-7-1 in GSC play, hit the road this weekend as they will play the Falcons from the University of Montevallo this Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).
