No. 10 Statesmen Set for Weekend Trip To Livingston

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (19-7, 12-3 GSC) will travel to Livingston, Ala., to take on the Tigers from the University of West Alabama (16-12, 10-5 GSC).
 
The Statesmen and the Tigers will play Friday at 5:00 p.m., (CDT) at Tartt Field. Saturday will consist of a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
 
The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call on the Statesmen Sports Network. West Alabama will provide a live stream on the FloCollege network.
 
Scouting the Statesmen
  • Delta State enters this weekend with a 19-7 overall record with a 12-3 record in Gulf South Conference play. The Statesmen cracked the top ten in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association national poll this week as they are ranked no. 10 in the country.
  • The Statesmen have been clicking on all cylinders on the mound and at the plate as the one-two punch of Drake Fontenot and Dylan Farley have started the season off strong. Fontenot holds a 6-0 overall record with a 0.77 ERA and 50 strikeouts in seven starts this season. Farley has established a game two starter with a 5-2 record with a 1.88 ERA and 40 strikeouts in seven starts this season.
  • Brett Burrell has established himself as one of the top hitters in the GSC so far this season. The Cleveland native holds a .437 batting average with seven doubles, seven home runs and 34 runs driven in this season.
Scouting the Tigers
  • West Alabama enters this weekend with a 16-12 overall record and a 10-5 record in conference play this season. The Tigers dropped a mid-week non-conference game against GSC opponent in Mississippi College 8-3 Tuesday night in Livingston.
  • The Statesmen will likely run into a senior southpaw in Bryant Quimby. Quimby has had seven starts with a 4-2 overall record holding a 3.11 ERA and has struck out 37 batters this season. Last Saturday, Quimby threw six innings, struck out eight batters in a 14-2 win against Montevallo
  • At the plate, the duo of Eli Burwash and Joe Watkins have shown solid production for the Tigers this season. Burwash leads all batters with a .347 batting average with eight doubles, three home runs and 17 runs driven in. Watkins has provided the power in the lineup with at slugging percentage of .593 with six home runs and 25 RBIs.
