No. 8 Statesmen Welcome Alabama Huntsville to Town for Three-Game Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (22-8, 15-3 GSC) will host a three-game series with the Chargers from the University of Alabama at Huntsville (14-15, 7-11 GSC) this weekend at Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
 
The Statesmen and the Chargers will kick the weekend off with a double header starting a 2:00 p.m., Friday afternoon. Both teams will play the third game of the series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
 
The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call for all three games on the Statesmen Sports Network. All games will also be streamed live on the FloCollege Network.
 
Scouting the Statesmen
  • Delta State would enter the weekend ranked no. 8 in this week's NCBWA poll with a 22-8 overall record and a 22-8 overall record and a 15-3 record in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State has won three straight weekend GSC three-game series.
  • Senior right hander Drake Fontenot is off to an impressive start for the green and white this season. The Bossier City native improved to 7-0 on the year after tossing a complete game four-hit shutout at West Alabama on Friday evening. In his longest outing of the year, the senior righty went the full nine innings, struck out five, and surrendered four hits.
  • At the plate, Brett Burrell has led the green and white with a .416 batting average with 34 RBIs and 15 extra base hits. Last weekend senior infielder Matthew Martinolich went 5-11 at the plate with his second home run of the season and two RBIs.
Scouting the Chargers
  • Alabama Huntsville enters this weekend with a 14-15 overall record and a 7-11 record in GSC play. The Chargers lost to Morehouse College 18-14 Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta.
  • Delta State will likely see Left handed pitcher Hunter MacLeod on the mound for the Chargers. The south paw holds a 1-3 overall record with a 7.39 ERA with 23 strikeouts and 10 walks in 28 innings pitched this season.
  • At the plate, UAH is led by JC Wilburn. Wilburn holds a .412 batting average with five home runs and 25 runs driven in. Against Morehouse Wednesday, Wilburn went 1-4 with a double.
