ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (26-8, 18-3 GSC) scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Reddies of Henderson State (18-16, 12-9 GAC) Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.
Senior left fielder
Brett Burrell had it going at the plate in the middle of the order as he went 3-4 with two doubles and two rbis on the afternoon. Freshman
Aidan McCrady earned his first career win on the mound for the green and white as he tossed an inning in relief.
The Statesmen fell behind 3-0 going into the fifth inning where
Triston Hickman would hit his second home run of the season to lead off the inning to make it 3-1.
The Statesmen would get to the top of the order in the same inning when
Wes Warnock would hit a rbi double to left center scoring
Cole Thompson to make it 3-2. Two batters later, Warnock would score on a rbi double from Burrell to tie the game up at 3-3.
Dylan Coleman would follow Burrell's at-bat with a single through the right side, leading to a
Dylan Dendy rbi single to give Delta State a 4-3 lead.
In the sixth and seventh, Delta State would get three strikeouts from
Jesse Homan and
Brady Davis to prevent the Reddies from threatening.
In the top of the eighth inning, Delta State would add some insurance runs with a two-run single from
Brendan McCauley to extend the lead to 6-3. On the next at-bat, Burrell would connect with a ground rule double to score Warnock, making it 7-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, senior closer
Josh Hill would get his ninth save of the season, clinching the Statesmen's 7-3 win.
The Statesmen will hit the road this weekend as they will travel to Montevallo, Ala., to take on the Falcons from the University of Montevallo. Game one of the three-game series will start Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. (CDT).
