No. 14 Statesmen Look to Finish Regular Season Strong at MC

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball Team (32-13, 23-7 GSC) will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series against the Choctaws from Mississippi College (28-19, 18-12 GSC) this weekend in Clinton, Miss.
 
The three-game series between MC and DSU will kick off with a single game Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CDT). The series will conclude with a double header Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
 
The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call on the Statesmen Sports Network with the pregame show starting at 5:30 p.m. (CDT) Friday and 12:30 p.m. (CDT) Saturday.
 
Scouting the Statesmen
  • Delta State enters this weekend with a 32-13 overall record and a 23-7 record in GSC play. The Statesmen will look to lock a no. 1 seed in the GSC Championship with two wins this weekend. Delta State defeated Harding 7-5 Tuesday afternoon in Searcy, Ark.
  • In the 7-5 win over Harding Tuesday afternoon, all-nine Statesmen batters in the starting lineup collected a hit. Senior second baseman Brendan McCauley gave the Statesmen a 7-5 lead with a two-run single to cap a five-run sixth inning. The Middle of the order for Delta State have been the biggest threat this season on offense led by Brett Burrell and Dylan Coleman. Burrell has the team best .397 batting average with 48 RBIs on 12 doubles, and nine home runs. Coleman currently hits .340 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs.
  • On the mound, the Weekend rotation of Drake Fontenot, Dylan Farley and Logan Eldridge have been the key to Delta State's success. Fontenot leads the way with a 9-0 record, holding a 1.37 ERA and 75 strikeouts. The Bossier City native holds opposing hitters to a .202 batting average. Dylan Farley has had back-to-back solid outings for the green and white. The southpaw has a 7-3 overall record with a 2.82 ERA and leads the GSC with as he had struck out batters looking 27 times this season. Eldridge is tied for a team high two complete games thrown this season as he is 4-4 in 12 starts.
Scouting the Choctaws
  • Mississippi College enters this weekend with a 28-19 overall record and a 18-12 record in GSC Play. The Choctaws clinched a spot in the GSC Championship bracket last weekend despite dropping two of three games against West Florida. The Choctaws enter this weekend on a two-game winning streak after defeating Arkansas-Monticello 8-4 Tuesday afternoon in Monticello.
  • At the plate, the Choctaws are led by senior infielder Korey Cooper and Bryce LaRocca. Cooper has a team high batting average of .365 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 runs driven in. LaRocca holds a .345 batting average with 13 doubles, 12 home runs and 55 runs driven in.
  • On the mound, Delta State will see junior right hander Caleb Peterson and senior Holland Townes. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native holds a 3-4 record with a 4.53 ERA, 54 strikeouts in 12 starts for MC. Townes holds a 3-5 record with a ERA of 5.51, 73 strikeouts in 67 innings pitched.
