MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State University Softball Team (11-23, 5-17 GSC) lost both games of their double header against the Falcons from the University of Montevallo (22-19, 12-12 GSC) Saturday afternoon at Orr Field in Montevallo.
The Lady Statesmen fell in a tight battle 7-4 in game one and Montevallo won game two 9-1.
GAME ONE
The Lady Statesmen battled back from being down 5-0 with a three-run top of the sixth and had the bases loaded with a chance to re gain the lead.
At the plate, senior outfielder
Abbi Cataldo went 2-3 with two rbis for Delta State in game one.
The Lady Statesmen would get on the board in the top of the fifth as Cataldo would hit her first rbi single of the game, to make it 5-1.
In the top of the sixth, Delta State would rally with two rbi singles from
Maeve Lavoy and Cataldo and a bases loaded walk from
Calli McConnell to make it a one run game at 5-4.
Montevallo would take advantage on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away with a 7-4 game one win.
GAME TWO
The Falcons pulled ahead early to a 9-0 lead through four innings of play.
The Lady Statesmen added a run in the top of the fifth inning with a lead off home run from
Kyleigh Wheaton to make it 9-1. That home run was Wheaton's second home run of the season.
The Lady Statesmen will come back home to University Field for a mid-week non-conference double header with the Reddies from Henderson State University Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (CDT).
