BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Delta State University Baseball's Senior Outfielder Brett Burrell has been selected as a finalist for the Gulf South Conference Commissioner Trophy and a GSC Top Ten Award Winner.

The Ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. The reception will begin 4:00 p.m. (CT) with the event beginning at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and concluding by 6:30 p.m. (CT).

The award recognizes the top female and top male student-athletes for their athletic, academic, and extracurricular achievements, during the 2024-25 academic year. The one student-athlete from each group of honorees will be also be awarded the Commissioner's Trophy, which is the conference's most prestigious individual honor and will be announced in-person at the GSC Awards Ceremony.

The GSC Top Ten Award recipients are selected with the assistance of an advisory committee representing Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators (SWA), Athletic Communication Directors, Faculty Athletic Representatives, and Presidents from randomly selected GSC schools, which makes a recommendation to the Commissioner, who has the final decision.

The conference top 10 recognizes not only the player, but the person as well.  Brett is one the best people that I have coached in my 23 years of coaching, along with being a great player.

"Brett has played in our program for 5 years and has done so with great humility." Head Coach Rodney Batts mentioned.  "He has been a coach's dream to coach, as he is an excellent teammate and person.  One of our team's core values is Compassion.  Brett is one who cares more about the feelings of others than he does himself.  He goes out of his way to make sure the younger players understand the program and helps them with things on and off the field."

Burrell led the Statesmen Baseball team as they are currently in the NCAA South Region Tournament on and off the field during the 2025 season.  The Cleveland native earned first team All-GSC honors this season as he led all Statesmen hitters with a .386 batting average, 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 51 runs driven in.

Off the Field, Burrell is an office in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Burrell has an institutional gpa of 3.81 as he is pursuing an MBA at Delta State University.
