PINEVILLE, La. – The Delta State University Men's Soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0-0 GSC) won their first contest of the season in commanding fashion on Friday evening, defeating Louisiana Christian 3-0 at Wildcat Field
Delta State wasted little time setting the tone. In the 7th minute,
Marco Cherchi capitalized on a loose ball in the box and calmly finished inside the left post for his first goal of the season, putting the Statesmen up 1-0. The pressure continued midway through the first half when
Ajay Stewart stole possession and buried his second goal of the season in the 29th minute to double the lead.
The Statesmen kept the energy high after the break. In the 61st minute, Stewart set up
Elijah Belk, who tapped home his first collegiate goal to push the margin to 3-0.
Delta State's defense was equally impressive, limiting the Wildcats to just seven shots in the match. Goalkeeper
Mason Baglio anchored the back line with three saves, securing his first shutout of the season. The Statesmen also showcased their depth, with 22 players seeing action in the road win.
Delta State out shot Louisiana Christian 17-7 and maintained composure despite a physical match that saw four yellow cards issued.
The Statesmen will finish their non-conference slate this Sunday at Delta Field against the Choctaws of Mississippi College at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
