MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Delta State University Women's Soccer Team (1-1-1, 0-0-0 GSC) took advantage of an early lead Tuesday afternoon, earning a 2–0 road victory over Georgia College (0-2-1, 0-0-0 PBC) at Bobcat Field.
The Green and White wasted little time setting the tone. In just the fifth minute,
Chloe Colquhoun sent a 25-yard chip shot that sailed over the goalkeeper to give Delta State an early 1–0 advantage.
From there, the Lady Statesmen defense and goalkeeper
Kim Bircher took control. Bircher was steady between the posts, stopping all three shots on target she faced to record her first shutout of the season. Anchored by strong play from defenders
Ava Steven and
Mackenzie Winters, Delta State frustrated the Bobcat attack, limiting them to just 11 total shots.
Delta State continued to apply pressure offensively, out shooting the Bobcats 16–11 and generating nine shots on goal. Their persistence paid off in the 87th minute when
Janya Gonzalez found the back of the net for her first Lady Statesmen goal off a well-placed cross from
Yalitza Zepeda on the right wing, sealing the 2–0 result.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action this upcoming weekend at Delta Field as they host the Sharks from Nova Southeastern University Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
