CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University men's soccer team fell to nationally ranked AUM 2-0 on Friday morning at Delta Field, as the Warhawks scored twice in the second half to secure the Gulf South Conference victory.
After a scoreless first half, AUM broke through in the 63rd minute when Benjamin Hoffman found the back of the net off an assist from Nathan Le Roux. Hoffman added his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute to extend the Warhawks' lead to 2-0.
Delta State goalkeeper
Daniel Santema kept the Statesmen within reach throughout the contest, recording four saves against an AUM attack that finished with 15 shots, including six on target. The Statesmen managed four shots, with one on goal.
Daniel Huerta recorded two shots for Delta State, while
Cole Fenton and
Ajay Stewart each added an attempt. Stewart registered the Statesmen's lone shot on target in the second half, forcing a save from AUM goalkeeper Jakob Buhrkuhl in the 77th minute.
The Statesmen were unable to generate a corner kick, while AUM finished with five. Delta State also applied pressure defensively, limiting the Warhawks to five second-half shots after AUM recorded 10 attempts before halftime.
Delta State falls to 2-9-2 overall and 0-6-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while AUM improves to 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in conference action.
The Statesmen will look to bounce back in their next contest as they continue Gulf South Conference play Wednesday afternoon against Mississippi Christian University.
