Statesmen Battle Badgers to a 1-1 Draw

MOBILE, Ala. — The Delta State University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Spring Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Library Field, with Cyrus Gulati scoring the Statesmen's lone goal.

Delta State (2-9-4, 0-6-3 Gulf South Conference) struck first in the eighth minute when Gulati found the back of the net at 7:50. Matthew Nicklas provided the assist, setting up Gulati for his first goal of the season and giving the Statesmen a 1-0 advantage.

The Statesmen carried that lead into halftime despite facing pressure from the Badgers. Spring Hill recorded nine first-half shots, but goalkeeper Daniel Santema and the Delta State defense kept the hosts off the scoreboard. Santema finished the opening half with seven saves as the Statesmen maintained their one-goal lead.

Delta State generated more offensive opportunities after the break, recording nine shots in the second half. Nicklas tested Spring Hill goalkeeper Jose Lozano Soto with consecutive attempts shortly after the hour mark, while Gulati continued to pressure the Badgers' defense.

Spring Hill (0-7-4, 0-6-3 GSC) equalized in the 60th minute when Tommy Wortham scored an unassisted goal at 59:29 to even the match at 1-1.

The Statesmen continued to push for a go-ahead goal in the closing stages. Gulati recorded multiple attempts late in the match, including shots in the 87th minute, but Spring Hill kept Delta State off the scoreboard. Lucas Crowley also attempted a shot in the final 10 minutes as the Statesmen searched for a winner.

Delta State finished with 12 shots, including seven on target, while Spring Hill recorded 13 shots and 10 on target. Santema totaled nine saves in 90 minutes of action, helping the Statesmen secure the draw.

Nicklas finished with two shots on target and an assist, while Gulati led Delta State with six shots and three on target. The Statesmen also limited Spring Hill to four corner kicks and committed nine fouls.

Delta State will look to build on Saturday's result as the season continues with the regular season finale next Friday at Lee University against the Flames.
