WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — The Delta State University softball team put together a complete day on Monday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against LeMoyne-Owen with a 9–1 win in game one followed by an 11–0 shutout in the nightcap.
Game One – Delta State 9, LeMoyne-Owen 1
The Lady Statesmen opened the day with an early offensive surge and steady pitching to take game one, scoring nine runs on 11 hits in a five-inning contest.
Delta State struck first in the opening inning as
Riley Leonard delivered a two-run single to center field, plating
Kyleigh Wheaton and
Hallie Turner to give DSU a 2–0 lead. The Statesmen added another run in the second inning when
Joryie McKnight singled home
Maya Mills, extending the advantage to 3–0.
The game broke open in the third inning as Delta State sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs.
Carly Dunigan drove in two with a triple, while Mills added an RBI groundout.
Callie McConnell followed with a two-run triple before Turner capped the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 9–0.
In the circle,
Kendal Moore earned the complete-game victory, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven and issuing no walks.
LeMoyne-Owen scored its lone run in the fourth inning, but Moore worked out of trouble to secure the win.
Leonard finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Dunigan, McConnell, Mills, and McKnight all drove in runs for the Statesmen.
Game Two – Delta State 11, LeMoyne-Owen 0
Game two remained scoreless through four innings before Delta State erupted for 11 runs including three inside the park home runs in the top of the fifth to complete the sweep.
The Lady Statesmen capitalized on defensive miscues early in the frame before the power bats took over.
Teague delivered an inside-the-park home run to drive in three runs, and moments later
Dunigan followed with another inside-the-park homer, scoring two more.
The big inning continued as
McConnell added an RBI single, and
Wheaton capped the scoring with a grand slam inside-the-park home run, clearing the bases and pushing the lead to 11–0.
In the circle,
Maeve Lavoy was dominant, tossing a five-inning shutout while allowing just three hits, walking one, and striking out eight to earn the win.
Delta State finished game two with 14 hits, led by Dunigan's 3-for-4, two-RBI performance and Wheaton's four-RBI effort.
The sweep moved the Statesmen to 2–7 on the season. DSU will have 10-day break before they hit the road for Gulf South Conference play against the Lady Bulldogs from Union University on Friday, February 20 at 4:00 p.m.
