JACKSON, Tenn. — The Delta State baseball team closed out a dominant weekend at Fesmire Field, taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader to complete a
three-game sweep of Union University.
The Statesmen outlasted the Bulldogs 3–2 in a 13-inning marathon in Game 1 before rolling to a 12–4 victory in Game 2 behind a six-run third inning and a relentless offensive attack.
Game 1: Delta State 3, Union 2 (13 innings)
Delta State leaned on elite pitching and late-game toughness to win a four-hour battle in the opener. Right-hander
Blake King delivered a workhorse outing, throwing
9.0 innings with just
two runs allowed and
three strikeouts.
Reliever
Dawson Muenzenmay was outstanding in extras, tossing
4.0 scoreless innings with
three strikeouts to earn the win.
Offensively, the Statesmen broke through in the fifth when
Tucker Jones singled home a run and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2–2. After both teams traded zeros for seven straight innings, Delta State finally broke the deadlock in the 13th.
Will Tamplain delivered the decisive blow, lining his first career RBI in his first career at-bat with a single to right to score
Levi Lang, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch and stolen second.
Muenzenmay closed the door in the bottom half, stranding the tying run at third to secure the extra-inning win.
Game 2: Delta State 12, Union 4
The nightcap belonged to the Statesmen from the opening pitch. Delta State scored
two runs in the first without recording a hit, capitalizing on four walks and a hit-by-pitch to take early control.
After a solo homer from
Brady Hendrix in the second, the Statesmen blew the game open with a
six-run third inning, highlighted by RBI hits from
Jones,
Cade Greer, and
Lang, along with multiple Union defensive miscues that extended the frame.
Catcher
Stone Collier paced the offense with a
3-for-4, 2 RBI performance, while Jones added two hits, two runs, and a sacrifice fly. Delta State finished with
13 hits and scored in six of seven innings.
On the mound,
Mason Shropshire earned the win with 2.2 innings of work before
Aidan McCrady closed out the final 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just two earned runs.
With the doubleheader sweep, Delta State improves to
9–2 and remains unbeaten in the Gulf South Conference at 6-0. The Statesmen combined for
15 runs on 22 hits across the two games and showcased both pitching depth and offensive versatility.
Delta State returns to action next week as it continues non-conference play with a road trip to Arkadelphia, Ark., Tuesday afternoon for a matchup against the Tigers from Ouachita Baptist University at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
