Statesmen fall to No. 16 Flames 6-1

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University men's tennis team battled nationally ranked No. 16 Lee University on Saturday at the Cleveland Country Club, but the Flames controlled the afternoon to hand the Statesmen a 6–1 setback.

Lee secured the doubles point behind wins on courts two and three. Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos topped Juan Diego Alzate and Alejandro Bravo 6–1 at No. 2, while Francisco Guimaraes and Rytis Razminas clinched the point with a 6–4 decision over Valentin Greco and Simon Ojeda at No. 3. Court one went unfinished with Marti Cerda Castillo and Valentino Millimaci trailing 4–3.

In singles, the Flames extended their lead with straight-set wins on courts one, three, five, and six. Krohn defeated Ojeda 6–1, 6–3 at the top spot, and Jip Langerhuizen followed with a 6–2, 6–2 result over Greco on court three. Guimaraes added a 7–5, 6–3 win against Bravo at No. 5, while Razminas closed out a 6–2, 6–4 decision over Millimaci at No. 6.

Delta State's lone point came from Cerda Castillo, who delivered the highlight of the day with a gritty comeback on court four. After dropping the opening set 4–6, he responded with a 7–5 second set and dominated the match tiebreak 10–8 to put the Statesmen on the board.

Alzate also pushed his match to a tight first set at No. 2 before falling 7–6, 6–1 to Quinn Groenendijk.

Delta State moves to 4–2 on the season and will hit the road next weekend for a neutral site non-conference match against Southwest Baptist University next Saturday at Southern Arkansas University.
