CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against West Florida, falling 10–8 in Game One and 16–13 in a high-scoring Game Two at Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
The Statesmen (11–4, 7–2 GSC) produced 21 total runs and 21 hits across the twin bill but were unable to overcome defensive miscues and late-inning UWF surges.
Game One: West Florida 10, Delta State 8
Delta State built an early 4–1 lead behind a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by
Jacob Palazzo's two-run homer to left and an RBI hit-by-pitch from
Tucker Jones. Palazzo finished 2-for-4 with
three RBI, and
Brady Hendrix added an RBI single in the eighth.
West Florida, however, capitalized on DSU's defensive struggles—
five errors —to score
nine runs over the final four innings. A four-run seventh flipped the game, and the Argos added three more in the ninth to create needed separation.
Key DSU Performances
- Palazzo: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI
- Jones: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 R
- Greer: RBI single, stolen base
- Maranto: RBI double in the eighth
Game Two: West Florida 16, Delta State 13
The nightcap turned into an offensive showcase, with 29 combined runs and 27 hits. West Florida opened with
10 runs in the first two innings, including two homers from Zack Stokes and a solo shot from Tyler Brobst.
Delta State answered with a furious late push, scoring
10 runs across the sixth and seventh innings, including:
- Drew Prosek's three-run homer in the seventh
- Trey Otts' three-run double in the sixth
- Cade Greer's two-run single to cap a six-run seventh
Despite the rally, the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
Key DSU Performances
- Otts: 2-for-2, 4 RBI, 2 R (3-run double)
- Prosek: 3-run HR in the seventh
- Greer: 2-for-5, 3 RBI (2-run double)
- Rock: 2-for-3, 2 R
- Allen: 2-for-3, 2 R
