Mobile, Ala. — Delta State softball opened its 2026 season on the road Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Spring Hill College. The Lady Statesmen jumped out to early leads in each contest, but the Badgers' high-powered offense proved too much, taking Game One 13–5 and Game Two 9–1.
Game One: Spring Hill 13, Delta State 5 (5 inn.)
Delta State came out firing in the opener, plating
four runs in the top of the first behind four hits and aggressive baserunning.
Mackenzie Mills delivered a two-RBI single, while
Mary Teague stole two bases—including a swipe of home—to cap the inning.
Calli McConnell,
Joryie McKnight, and
Kyleigh Wheaton each posted multi-hit efforts as DSU collected 10 hits overall.
Spring Hill responded immediately with four runs of its own in the bottom half, and after a quiet second and third inning, the Badgers erupted for
seven runs in the fourth. SHC's
Meredith Fontenot led the charge with a 3-for-4, five-RBI performance, including a go-ahead two-run homer.
Wheaton added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to bring DSU within one, but Spring Hill's late surge put the game out of reach.
Game Two: Spring Hill 9, Delta State 1 (5 inn.)
The Lady Statesmen again struck first in the nightcap.
McKnight reached on a strikeout-wild pitch, stole second and third, and scored on an
RBI single from Wheaton, giving DSU a 1–0 lead in the opening frame.
Spring Hill answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and broke the game open with a
five-run third, part of a 19-hit performance. The Badgers recorded at least one hit from every spot in the lineup, with
Amanda Glowacki (4-for-4),
M. Villar (3-for-4), and
J. Gordon (3-for-4) leading the way.
Delta State's offense was limited to two hits—Wheaton's RBI single and a second-inning single from
Ally Agner—as SHC pitcher
E. Curry tossed a complete game with just one run allowed.
