MONTICELLO, Ark. — The Delta State University baseball team rallied late but fell just short in a 10-inning battle as Arkansas-Monticello edged the Statesmen 9-8 Tuesday evening at Union Bank Park.
Delta State (13-7) totaled 12 hits in the contest and erased multiple deficits, including a three-run surge in the eighth inning, but the Boll Weevils plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to secure the victory.
The Statesmen struck first in the opening inning.
Jacob Hill singled to start the game, stole third, and came home on an RBI groundout by
Cade Greer to give DSU an early 1-0 lead.
Arkansas-Monticello answered and eventually built a 4-1 advantage before Delta State chipped away throughout the middle innings.
Bo Rock provided a big swing for the Statesmen, blasting a home run and adding a double as part of a multi-hit performance.
Austin Estes also doubled and swiped a base for DSU.
Trailing late, the Statesmen mounted a rally in the eighth inning, scoring three runs to regain momentum and tie the game. Hill continued to pressure the defense on the bases, stealing three bases in the contest.
The Boll Weevils answered in the ninth to force extra innings before pushing across the game-winning run in the 10th.
Dawson Muenzenmay (3-1) took the loss in relief for Delta State. The Statesmen used six pitchers in the game, with
Mason Shropshire getting the start.
Arkansas-Monticello (12-9) finished with 14 hits in the contest.
Delta State will look to bounce back this weekend, as they will hit the road to take on the Blazers from Valdosta State in a three-game GSC series starting Friday at 1:00 p.m (CT)/2:00 p.m (ET).
