Statesmen head to the Peach State to take on Valdosta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team hits the road this weekend to take on the Blazers from Valdosta State University this weekend at Billy Grant Field at Tammy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga.
 
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)/2:00 p.m. (ET), followed by a single game Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (CT)/1:00 p.m. (ET)
 
The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will provide the play-by-play broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Radio Network on majic 107.5 FM.
 
Scouting The Statesmen
  • Delta State is looking to snap their two-game skid entering this weekend. The Statesmen are in third in the GSC standings with a 13-7 overall record and are 9-3 in Gulf South Conference Play.
  • On the mound the Statesmen relied on their senior left-handed pitcher Adrian Byrd. Byrd enters this weekend with a 3-0 record and a 1.76 ERA and a .91 WHIP. The Wiggins native has been dominant striking out 38 batters and only allowing five free passes in five starts.
  • Against Arkansas Monticello Tuesday night, senior first baseman Bo Rock went 2-4 at the plate including his third career Home Run at Union Bank Park in Monticello. The Amory native drove in three runs in the game.
  • Austin Estes led the Statesmen with three hits and a rbi in Tuesday night's extra inning loss to UAM. The Piedmont, Ala., native is currently hitting .343 on the season with three doubles, two triples and 12 runs driven in.  
  • Entering this weekend, the offense is led by DH Levi Lang. Lang is currently batting .361 with 22 hits and 13 runs driven in.
  • Redshirt Freshman Cooper Walls has got some time recently at Third Base. The McCalla, Ala., native is currently hitting .400 with three runs driven in in 10 at-bats so far this season.
Scouting the Blazers
  • Valdosta State looks to add on to their series finale win against nationally ranked West Alabama last weekend in Livingston. The Blazers recently fell in a non-conference midweek battle to Embry-Riddle 17-14 Tuesday afternoon in Valdosta.
  • The Statesmen will likely face junior right-hander Garrett Moody in game one tomorrow afternoon. Last weekend in Livingston, Moody went 5.2 innings struck out six batters gave up seven hits and three earned runs and took the loss against West Alabama. Moody entering this weekend, holds a 0-2 record with a 7.81 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 16 walks. Opponents are hitting .352 against Moody
  • The Blazers at the plate are led by junior Outfield Charlie Banks. Banks enters this weekend with a .351 batting average with seven home runs and 21 runs driven in. Against Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, Banks had nine at-bats going 3-9 with two solo home runs and scored three runs.
