CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team picked up a dominant doubleheader sweep over LeMoyne-Owen College on Tuesday at University Field, highlighted by a historic performance in the nightcap as the Lady Statesmen recorded their first no-hitter since 2021.
Delta State improved to 10-17 on the season with wins of 7-0 in game one and 10-2 in five innings in game two.
Game One: Delta State 7, LeMoyne-Owen 0
In the opener, Delta State jumped out early and never looked back in a 7-0 victory. The Statesmen plated four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of early opportunities before adding insurance in the third and fourth.
Kyleigh Wheaton powered the offense with a home run and three RBIs, while
Mary Teague and
Maeve Lavoy each collected multiple hits at the top of the lineup.
In the circle,
Averi Bridgman delivered a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits while striking out 11 and working around six walks. The junior kept LeMoyne-Owen off the scoreboard in key moments, stranding multiple runners to secure the win.
Game Two: Delta State 10, LeMoyne-Owen 2 (5 innings)
Game two saw Delta State turn in one of its most dominant performances of the season, both offensively and in the circle, rolling to a 10-2 run-rule victory.
The Lady Statesmen erupted for six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Wheaton. Delta State continued to apply pressure with four more runs in the fourth, fueled by timely hitting from
Carly Dunigan and continued production throughout the lineup.
Joryie McKnight led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Dunigan and Wheaton each drove in multiple runs.
The story of game two, however, was in the circle.
Ellie Cox and
Kendal Moore combined to throw a no-hitter, the program's first since 2021. Cox earned the win, tossing three innings without allowing a hit, while Moore closed out the final two frames to seal the historic performance. LeMoyne-Owen's only runs came unearned, as the duo worked through five walks and kept the opposition hitless throughout.
Delta State will look to carry the momentum forward as the Lady Statesmen continue Gulf South Conference play later this week against the Tigers from West Alabama.
