CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University baseball team fell in both games of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against West Alabama, dropping the opener 10–5 before falling 11–5 in the nightcap at Ferriss Field.
In Game 1, the Tigers used three multi-run innings and a pair of home runs from Jack Buening to pull away. Delta State (15–12, 10–7 GSC) answered early with a two-run double from
Austin Batts in the second and added single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, but West Alabama (23–6, 14–4) continued to generate timely offense. Batts finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, while
Levi Lang added two hits and an RBI.
Cade Greer homered in the seventh, and
Landon Holliman tripled home a run in the sixth.
Blake King (1–2) took the loss after allowing seven runs over 4.1 innings.
In Game 2, West Alabama again struck early, building a 6–0 lead through three innings behind two home runs from Hayes Alford. Delta State responded with a pair in the third on an RBI fielder's choice from
Jacob Palazzo and an RBI single by
Cade Greer. Holliman delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth and later doubled and scored again as part of a three-hit day. Lang added an RBI single in the sixth.
Aidan McCrady (0–4) was charged with the loss after 2.2 innings. The Tigers totaled 13 hits, including a two-run homer from Kaiden Jones in the fifth.
Across the doubleheader, Holliman reached base five times, scored three runs, and recorded four hits including a double and a triple. Greer reached safely in both games and drove in three runs on the day. Lang finished with three RBI across the two contests.
Delta State will hit the road Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Magnolia, Ark., to take on the Muleriders from Southern Arkansas University at 3:00 p.m.
