CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team turned in its most complete day of the season, riding dominant pitching, timely hitting, and sustained pressure at the plate to sweep Christian Brothers University in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at University Field. The Lady Statesmen improved to 8–13 overall and 4–4 in GSC play with wins of
9–1 on Friday and
11–7 on Friday.
GAME 1 — Delta State 9, Christian Brothers 1 (6 inn.)
Maeve Lavoy delivered another standout performance in the circle, tossing a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts and just one walk. She faced only 27 batters and allowed a single run, controlling the pace from the opening pitch.
Delta State's offense backed her early with a four-run second inning highlighted by RBI knocks from
Hallie Turner and
Ally Agner, along with an unearned run that opened the scoring.
Joryie McKnight sparked the lineup with a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice and driving in one.
Carly Dunigan,
Agner, and
Lavoy each added two hits as DSU piled up 13 total.
Delta State added insurance with single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth, ending the game via run rule on
Rebecca Martinez's RBI single in the sixth.
GAME 2 — Delta State 11, Christian Brothers 7
Friday's matchup turned into a wild, high-scoring affair, but Delta State's offense answered every punch. After CBU erupted for seven runs in the fourth to take a 7–6 lead, the Lady Statesmen responded with
five unanswered runs across the fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.
Calli McConnell delivered one of her best outings of the season, going 2-for-3 with a double and
four RBI, including a two-run double in the fourth that reclaimed the lead.
Kyleigh Wheaton scored three times and added two hits, while
Mary Teague and
Carly Dunigan each posted multi-hit efforts. DSU finished with 12 hits and capitalized on six CBU errors.
In the circle,
Averi Bridgman earned her first win of the season in relief, and
Maeve Lavoy returned to close the door with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
