CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University women's tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over the University of Montevallo on Friday at Cleveland Country Club, using a strong showing in singles play to pull away after a tightly contested doubles point.
Montevallo claimed the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. The Statesmen's lone win came at No. 2 doubles, where Anastasiia Iakovlieva and Trinity Ly cruised to a 6-1 victory. However, the Falcons earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the early 1-0 lead.
Delta State quickly responded in singles, winning five of the six matches to seal the team victory.
At the top of the lineup, Amelia Ciesielczyk battled to a first-set win before her opponent retired, evening the match at 1-1. Trinity Ly followed with a hard-fought straight-set win at No. 2 singles, claiming a tiebreak in the opening set before closing it out 7-5 in the second.
Yasmina Mayer added another point for the Statesmen at No. 3 singles, rallying after dropping the first set and ultimately winning by opponent retirement in the third. Iakovlieva delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-2 performance at No. 4 singles to extend the lead.
Lena Kuehn capped off the scoring for Delta State with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Montevallo's only singles point came at the No. 5 position.
With the win, Delta State improves to 11-7 overall on the season and is 2-5 in conference play. The Lady Statesmen will host the Tigers from the University of West Alabama for Senior Day at 2:00 p.m., Monday afternoon at the Cleveland Country Club.
