TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team saw its 2026 season come to an end Thursday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to no. 3 West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.
Delta State finishes the year with an 11-9 overall record after earning a spot in the conference tournament and battling against one of the league's top programs in the opening round.
West Florida claimed the doubles point by taking victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At the top spot, Amelia Ciesielczyk and Yasmina Mayer fell to the nationally ranked duo of Sandra Recuenco and Carlota Verdu, 6-1. Lena Kuehn and Angie Moreno dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles match featuring Trinity Ly and Anastasi Iakovlieva was left unfinished.
In singles play, the Lady Statesmen picked up their lone point at No. 2 singles as Yasmina Mayer earned a win by opponent retirement over No. 33-ranked Sandra Recuenco after battling through the opening sets.
West Florida secured the remaining points at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the match. Anastasiia Iakovlieva fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, while Lena Kuehn dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 5. Angie Moreno battled at No. 6 before falling 6-0, 6-4.
Two other singles matches were left unfinished after the Argonauts clinched the team victory. Amelia Ciesielczyk was in a tight battle at No. 1 singles, trailing 6-4, 2-4, while Trinity Ly was competing at No. 3 singles when play was stopped.
The Lady Statesmen close the season with 11 team victories, improving from the 2024-25 season and another postseason appearance under their belt.
