Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Delta State University baseball team fought deep into extra innings Thursday, but Lee University pulled away with a 4-3 win in 11 innings during the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.
The Statesmen struck first in the third inning when
Levi Lang launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring
Tucker Jones and giving DSU a 2-0 advantage.
Adrian Byrd was outstanding on the mound, tossing 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts while holding Lee to two runs.
Lee chipped away with solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings before taking a 3-2 lead in the ninth. Delta State answered in the bottom half as
Cade Greer scored on a
Henley Parker hit and run RBI groundout to force extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Lee regained the lead with a solo homer in the 11th. The Statesmen threatened in the bottom half, drawing three walks, but could not bring home the equalizer.
Lang finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run, while
Tucker Jones added two hits.
Delta State will face Edward Waters University tomorrow in an elimination game at 1:00 p.m.
