Lady Statesmen Fall to Flames in Regular Season Finale 9-1

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Delta State University softball team dropped a Gulf South Conference contest to Lee, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at Butler Field.

The Lady Statesmen (13-37, 7-26 GSC) were limited offensively, finishing with four hits, while Lee (21-34, 12-21 GSC) used a pair of big innings to secure the run-rule victory.

Delta State threatened early as Maeve Lavoy recorded two hits in the game, including a first-inning single, but the Statesmen were unable to capitalize.

Lee broke through in the third inning, using an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead before adding four runs in the fourth to extend the advantage to 5-0.

The Lady Statesmen got on the board in the sixth inning when Carly Dunigan singled and later scored on a Calli McConnell RBI double to left center, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

However, Lee answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on an error before Addison Emmerson delivered a three-run homer to center as part of a four-run frame to end the game.

Lavoy (7-14) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings while striking out four. Ellie Cox worked one inning in relief.

McConnell led Delta State at the plate with a double and the lone RBI, while Dunigan added a hit and scored the team's only run.

The Lady Statesmen finished the season 13-37 overall and 7-26 in Gulf South Conference Play.
