Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. — The Delta State University women's soccer team scored three second-half goals to erase an early deficit and defeat Saint Leo, 3-2, in Thursday afternoon's season opener at University Soccer Field.

The Lady Statesmen (1-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime before erupting offensively in the final 45 minutes. Saint Leo struck first in the 30th minute, but Delta State responded with a trio of goals after the break to secure the comeback victory.

Millie Congerton ignited the rally in the 58th minute, finishing off an assist from Mariela Dolan to even the score at 1-1. Just over five minutes later, Caroline Chandler gave DSU its first lead of the match with a goal off a pass from Emma Earwood in the 63rd minute.

Saint Leo answered quickly with a penalty kick goal to tie the match at 2-2, but the Lady Statesmen delivered the decisive blow in the 84th minute. Avery Allison netted the game-winner, assisted by Chandler, to seal the 3-2 victory.

Delta State outshot Saint Leo 13-7 and held a significant advantage in corner kicks, 18-3, showcasing sustained offensive pressure throughout the contest.

In goal, Kim Bircher played all 90 minutes, recording four saves and earning the win for the Lady Statesmen.

Chandler led the way offensively with three points on a goal and an assist, while Congerton and Allison each added a goal. Dolan and Earwood also contributed assists in the victory.

Delta State will look to build on its strong start as the Lady Statesmen continue their non-conference slate. With a trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., on Saturday to take on the Tritons from Eckerd College.
