ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.. — The Delta State University women's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Eckerd College on Saturday morning at Johnson Field.
The Lady Statesmen (1-0-1) leaned on a strong defensive effort throughout the match, highlighted by an outstanding performance in goal from
Piper Burgess. The sophomore goalkeeper recorded 11 saves across 90 minutes, preserving the clean sheet against a high-volume Eckerd attack. The save is her fifth career save moving her into fourth all-time in program history
Eckerd controlled much of the offensive pressure, outshooting Delta State 22-7 and placing 11 shots on target, but the Lady Statesmen defense consistently rose to the challenge. Burgess was particularly strong in the first half, making eight saves to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.
Delta State found more rhythm in the second half, generating five shots and forcing Eckerd goalkeeper Madi Winn into a pair of saves.
Janya Gonzalez and
Mariela Dolan each registered shots on goal to lead the Lady Statesmen attack.
Despite several late opportunities from both sides, neither team could find the breakthrough, resulting in Delta State's first draw of the 2026 season .
The Lady Statesmen will look to build on their defensive momentum as they continue non-conference play next week with a road trip to Illinois, to take on the Bearcats from McKendree University.
