LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The Delta State University women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to earn a 2-1 road victory over West Alabama Wednesday evening at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.
The Lady Statesmen improved to
3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play with the victory, while West Alabama fell to 1-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league action.
West Alabama struck first in the fourth minute when Bailee Fairley converted a pass from Tianna Klysh to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. Delta State answered less than eight minutes later, as
Emma Earwood found the back of the net in the 12th minute to level the match at 1-1.
The score remained tied through halftime, with Delta State generating 12 shots and earning five corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes. Goalkeeper
Kim Bircher made four saves in the first half to keep the Lady Statesmen within striking distance.
Delta State found the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute. After saves by West Alabama goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez on attempts from
Mariela Dolan and
Ava Morin,
Millie Webb capitalized to put the Lady Statesmen ahead 2-1.
The Lady Statesmen defense held firm over the final 32 minutes, limiting West Alabama to three second-half shots. Bircher finished the match with
four saves and earned the victory, improving to 3-2-1 on the season.
Delta State finished the night with an
18-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Statesmen also held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Earwood and Webb each scored for Delta State, while Bircher recorded the victory in goal. Webb's game-winning goal marked her second of the season, while Earwood also collected her second goal of the campaign.
The Lady Statesmen return to action looking to build on the road victory as they return to Delta Field Saturday afternoon with a conference matchup with the Falcons from the University of Montevallo.
