CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University men's soccer team fell to the University of Montevallo 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Delta Field.
The Falcons took an early lead as Nolan Peffer opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Joaquin Wladdimiro added a second goal in the 21st minute to give the Falcons an early cushion they would not relinquish.
Delta State (2-7-1, 0-4-0 GSC) managed eight shots, including three on goal, but was unable to break through against Montevallo goalkeeper Andre Etcheverry, who recorded the shutout.
Cyrus Gulati led the Statesmen with three shots, while
Elijah Belk and
Callum Black each contributed offensively. Goalkeeper
Daniel Santema made six saves for Delta State.
Montevallo finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, controlling the pace throughout the match.
Delta State returns to Gulf South Conference play next Saturday as they head to the Music City to take on the Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University.
