Statesmen Fall to CBU 4-0 to wrap up non-conference play

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University men's soccer program dropped their final non-conference match 4-0 to Christian Brothers University on Wednesday afternoon at Delta Field.

The Buccaneers struck early and never looked back, capitalizing on an own goal in the 11th minute before adding three second-half scores to secure the win. Christian Brothers improved to 2-3 on the year, while the Statesmen moved to 2-3-1.

Delta State generated 11 shots on the afternoon, including two on goal, but was unable to break through against Buccaneers goalkeeper Grant Clothier, who recorded two saves in the shutout. Daniel Huerta led the Statesmen with three shots, putting two on frame, while Romario Castro added a team-high four attempts.

Christian Brothers held a slight edge in total shots, 16-11, and converted efficiently with five shots on goal resulting in four scores. The Buccaneers also matched Delta State in corner kicks at five apiece.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Christian Brothers doubled its advantage immediately out of the break on a penalty kick. The Buccaneers added insurance goals in the 79th and 86th minutes to put the match out of reach.

Max Alonso made two saves in goal for Delta State, playing all 90 minutes.

The Statesmen will look to bounce back in their next match as they start conference play next Wednesday at home against Union University.
