BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Two Delta State University Statesmen basketball players were named to the All-Gulf South Conference Team, as released on Tuesday. Senior
Chad Akins was named First Team point guard, the third All-GSC honor for Akins in his illustrious career, while
Marqueys Brown represented the Statesmen on the Second Team at center.
Despite missing six games this season, Akins ranks second in the GSC in total assists, with 145. However, Akins leads the GSC with 7.25 dishes per game. The 2009 All-South Region Second Team selection ranks second in the league with a 2.96 assist/turnover ratio.
The Madison native is currently 35 assists away from breaking the all-time record of 559 set by Scott Nagy from 1985-88.
Akins is averaging a career high 10.2 points per game and 11.5 in GSC contests.
Brown was named Second Team center in his first season at DSU.
The electrifying talent is averaging 11.4 points per game and 12.1 in GSC action. The Crichton College transfer leads the Statesmen with 6.4 rebounds per game and ranks third in the league with 3.1 offensive boards per game.
The Memphis, Tenn., native is averaging 17.3 points per game in his last four outings.
Valdosta State's Tyrone Curnell was named East Division Player of the Year, while 20 year veteran Lennie Acuff was named East Coach of the Year.
Brandon Friedel of Arkansas Tech was named GSC West Player of the year. Friedel's coach, Mark Downey was named West Coach of the Year.
The Statesmen open their 2010 postseason at the GSC Tournament in Southaven's Desoto Civic Center on Friday March 5 at 5:30 p.m. when they take on North Alabama
