Statesman defensive back, Johnquavious McBride, has been named this week’s CableOne GoStatesmen.com Male Athlete of the Week.

While the Atlanta native notched five tackles in the team’s victory over West Florida last Saturday, it was his prowess on special teams that proved to be the real difference maker.

With Delta State trailing UWF 25-21 early in the fourth quarter, Statesman Quantarius Boone blocked an Argonaut field goal attempt.  McBride then scooped the ball up and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown.  The senior’s runback not only gave Delta State its first lead since the second quarter but would ultimately prove to be the deciding score in the 28-25 victory.

McBride looks to add to his team-leading 59 tackles when the Statesmen take on Valdosta State at home Saturday.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
