Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball player Shaniyah Buford was named a Guaranty Bank Featured Athlete of the Week after her games against in-state rival Mississippi College.
In the first game against the Lady Choctaws, Buford carried the Lady Statesmen with 23 points and five assists in 34 minutes as the Lady Statesmen fell by a single point.
Buford followed that performance up with a 19 point, four rebound, one assist and one block performance against the Lady Choctaws in a narrow double overtime defeat.
Buford posted 21 points per game for the two-game series, while adding 2.0 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game and one block per game for the Lady Statesmen.
Delta State travels to Union (Tenn.) University to start the new year. The Lady Statesmen and Lady Bulldogs will tip at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8, followed by a Jan. 9 contest at 3 p.m.
