Robinson's double-double power Statesmen past Falcons, 89-79

CLEVELAND- The Delta State University men's basketball team dominated in all categories and Alton Robinson finished with his second double-double on the season, as the Statesmen defeated Montevallo, 89-79, Saturday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen earned their third straight win, as they improve to 7-2 on the season.  The Falcons fall to 6-6 on the year. 

The Statesmen and the Falcons were in a heated battle straight from the tip-off, each team looking for any sign of momentum. Montevallo had a one point lead before Alton Robinson knocked in four straight points to give the Statesmen their first lead with 13:35 remaining in the half. The Statesmen would extend that lead by as many as 15, before heading into the locker room with a 43-30 lead. 

Delta State shot 51 percent in the first half, however the battle at the boards was much closer, 20-19 Statesmen. 

Robinson had 15 points at the break to lead the Statesmen, while Arian Maliqi finished 10 at the halfway mark. 

The Statesmen picked up where they left off early in the second half, despite a good start by the Falcons, who improved in the second half shooting 46 percent from the floor and racking up a 49-46 point advantage. 

The story of the night was Robinson, who finished with a team-high 21 points and 13 rebounds and was one of four Statesmen to rack up double digits. Maliqi and Eric Spencer finished with 16 points apiece while Oliver Mansour had 11 on the night. Chad Akins finished with nine points and 10 assists.

Nate Flowers lead the Falcons with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, one of five players to finish in double figures for the visitors. 

The Statesmen will remain at home this Tuesday as they square off with Texas College to close out the first half of the season. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
