CLEVELAND- The Statesmen had their chances late in the game, but it was corner kicks that cost them in the end as they lost a hard fought battle 2-1 to Belhaven College Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen fall to 7-3-1 on the season, while the Blazers improve to 8-0-1.
The Statesmen, who had two victories in their last four matches at home, found themselves trailing almost 15 minutes into the game. David McCray's corner kick found the head of Juan Rodriguez to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
The Statesmen caught a break at the 27 minute mark. David Smith broke through the Belhaven defense and was brought down from behind in the penalty area by Ricky Machel, who then sent off for the infraction. Smith equalized on the penalty kick.
Both teams were giving all they had in the second half. The Statesmen had a chance to tie the game but Aaron Wilbanks couldn't finish from five yards out.
The Blazers recorded the game winner on another kick, this time scored by Kevin Wittmann, 2-1 Blazers.
The Statesmen will open conference play at home against Christian Brothers University. Kick-off is set for 3
