SPRINGFIELD, ILL-The Statesmen picked up their third straight win on the season, with a comfortable 4-0 shutout over Robert Morris-Lake County Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are on their longest winning streak since September 6-24 where they had a four game stretch. Delta State improves to 3-1 on the season.
Delta State took the early lead, just 25 minutes into the contest, as
Steven Axe connected on his third goal of the season. The Eagles had their chances in the first half, however were outshot 5-3.
Junior
David Smith exploded in the second half with two goals in less than eight minutes before Axe put the icing on the win with second goal of the game with 30 minutes left in the game.
Senior keeper
Trey Jones picked up four saves in the shutout win.
The Statesmen have now scored 17 goals in the last three games.
“We needed to get these wins early in the season”, head coach Jim Allen stated. “It will give us a little more confidence I think heading into conference play when we need to win every game we play”.
The Statesmen have their home opener September 9 against Central Baptist University. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Delta Field.
