Statesmen set to open GSC play against OBU Tigers

Game Notes: Ouachita Baptist Tigers at Delta State

CLEVELAND - The Statesmen (10-3, 0-0 GSC) of Delta State University begin their quest for a seventh Gulf South Conference championship Saturday, Jan. 10 when they host the Tigers (10-3, 0-0 GSC) of Ouachita Baptist University at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Game time is set for 6 p.m. 

Coach Jason Conner's Statesmen are leading the GSC in scoring heading into the conference opener Saturday with OBU. DSU is averaging 88.0 points per game behind the league's top three-point shooting attack (.391). Led by junior point guard Chad Akins (6-1 • Madison), DSU is dishing out a league-best 22.5 assists per game. 

The Statesmen will be challenged by coach Charlie Schaef's fast-paced Tiger attack. OBU spent part of the non-conference schedule ranked in the NABC's Top 25 Poll. However, a few recent setbacks have dropped the Tigers from the national rankings. 

Saturday's contest will mark the 36th meeting all-time between the school's. DSU leads the all-time series 25-10. Last season, DSU and OBU split the series 1-1.
