Cooper's 21 points carry Lady Statesmen past Lady Reddies 76-67

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –Bug Cooper scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half to power the Delta State University women's basketball team to a 76-67 come-from-behind win over Henderson State on the road at the Duke Wells Center Saturday.

The Lady Statesmen, who clinched the Gulf South Conference West Division title a week ago, finishes the regular season 23-6, and 13-1 in GSC play. The Lady Reddies fall to 10-16 overall, and 4-10 in league action.

After trailing by as many as seven in the second half, Bug Cooper and the Lady Statesmen outscored the Lady Reddies 22-11 down the stretch to seal the win.

DSU finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field, while holding HSU to 38.6 percent. The Lady Statesmen were also hot from three-point range, connecting on 47.8 percent of their attempts.

Delta State's Cooper, who leads the nation in assists, turned into the scorer coach Sandra Rushing needed in the second half. The Indianola native connected on 6-of-9 shots, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. She also hauled in four boards and dished out six assists.

Veronica Walker also scored in double figures for the Lady Statesmen with 13 points.

Trenia Barbee led HSU with 21 points in the season-ending loss.

Down 19-14 with nine minutes remaining in the half, the Lady Statesmen outscored the Lady Reddies 19-15 to trail by only a point at half time, 34-33. DSU shot just 36.7 percent (11-of-30) after missing several lay-ups. HSU nailed 46.2 percent of their field goal attempts (12-of-26).

DSU did out-rebound HSU in the first half 22-13, but nine turnovers led to the Lady Reddies first half surge.

HSU's Chanlee Bottoms led all scorers at the break with 12 points.

Moe Bell and Shameka Russell led DSU with six points apiece.

The Lady Statesmen return to the court March 4-8 to defend their Gulf South Conference championship at the GSC Tournament at the DeSoto Civic Center. As the West Division champion, the Lady Statesmen will face the winner of the East four-seed versus West five-seed play-in game on Thursday. Game times have not been finalized at press time.
