Statesmen blast Thorobreds 19-0

CLEVELAND – The Delta State University baseball team extended its winning-streak to five games Tuesday with a convincing 19-0 shutout win over Kentucky State University at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen (11-9) scored 19 runs on nine hits with no errors, while the Thorobreds (1-5) connected on three hits and committed one error.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 4-0 in the bottom of the first on Cade Hoggard's 450-foot blast to left- center.

Kellen Bozeman's three-run home run to left field extended Delta State's lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the second.

The Statesmen tacked on another run in the third on Steven Oswald's RBI-single, and three runs in the fourth on Devin Goodwin's two-RBI triple to left-center.

Leading 13-0, Billy Ray Todd slapped a two-RBI single back up the box, and Matthew Little smashed a three-run home run to left to make it 19-0 DSU.

Cody Kelley (1-1) picked up the win for the green-and-white, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings allowing one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Chris Ferriss also worked 3.0 scoreless innings of relief before giving way to Cody Hallmark, who pitched the seventh.

Jacob Brackett (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for Throrobreds after pitching 1.1 innings allowing six earned runs on one hit with three walks. Jamaal Duncan worked in relief allowing 13 runs on eight hits.

Hoggard (6) smashed two home runs and drove in six to lead the Statesmen at the plate. Bozeman (6) also went deep, driving in three Statesmen. Goodwin also drove in three runs and scored two for the Statesmen.

Raphael Amery and Jarrett Cheatham recorded one hit each for KSU.

The Statesmen and Thorobreds will complete the three-game series Wednesday with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Ferriss Field.
