CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University baseball earned a split in Friday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Montevallo at Ferriss Field, falling 13–8 in the opener before responding with a 12–8 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1: Montevallo 13, Delta State 8
Montevallo struck early and never trailed, using seven runs in the first three innings and a three-run ninth to pull away in the opener. The Falcons finished with 17 hits, led by Ian Cartwright's four-hit, five-RBI performance, including a leadoff home run in the first inning.
Delta State cut the deficit to 7–6 in the sixth after
Cooper Walls' solo homer and
Landon Holliman's fifth-inning blast, but Montevallo answered with late insurance.
Tucker Jones doubled twice and scored twice, while
Austin Estes delivered a three-run homer in the second.
Cade Greer added an RBI double in the third.
Game 2: Delta State 12, Montevallo 8
Delta State flipped the script in Game 2, erupting for
10 runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to secure the split. The Statesmen posted 11 hits and drew eight walks while not committing an error.
After Montevallo built a 4–2 lead behind early home runs from Hollon Brock and Hudson Allen, DSU answered with a five-run fourth.
Levi Lang's RBI infield single and
Drew Prosek's two-run double highlighted the frame, giving the Statesmen their first lead of the day.
The fifth inning pushed the margin further as
Henley Parker homered,
Lang drew a bases-loaded walk, and
Prosek singled home two more, extending the advantage to 9–6.
Delta State added three more in the sixth, including
Cooper Walls' solo homer and a steal-of-home sequence by Parker and a third rbi off the bat of Lang with a single up the middle.
Ryan Herbison (3–1) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings.
Dawson Muenzenmay closed the final frame.
Offensively,
Tucker Jones homered and scored twice,
Lang drove in three, and
Prosek finished with a game-high four RBI.
