CLEVELAND- The Delta State University baseball team smashed six home runs, led by
Devin Goodwin's three, as the Statesmen rolled to a 29-5 victory over Pace University in game two of a three game set at Ferriss Field Saturday afternoon.
The Statesmen have won three straight contests, and improve to .500 on the season at 9-9, while the Setters fall to 2-3.
Pace took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, before shutting down the Statesmen in the bottom half.
The Statesmen responded with five runs in the second, capped by home runs from
Kellen Bozeman and Goodwin, his first of three on the day.
Delta State would extend their lead to 7-2 at the end of three innings, scoring three runs.
Patrick Strack hit a solo home run to left to lead off the inning, and finished with two in the game.
Statesmen would open up the game big in the fifth and sixth, scoring a combined 13 runs for a commanding 20-3 lead. Delta State tacked on seven runs in the final two innings to close out their biggest offensive game of the year thus far.
The Statesmen combined for a season-high 29 hits in the contest, including seven home runs and eight doubles.
T. J. Hitt had the best day at the plate for Statesmen going 5-for-7 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Goodwin finished 3-for-4 with three home runs (5) and six RBIs.
Joey Haston (2-2) earned the win pitching 6.0 innings allowing nine hits and three runs.
Nicholas DeMeo took the loss, lasting 2.1 innings giving up seven runs on eight hits.
The Statesmen will close out the three-game series Sunday with Pace University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Ferriss Field.
