CLEVELAND- The Statesmen did not get the result they wanted last week against a tough North Alabama squad and lost their grip on the Gulf South Conference title. With the playoffs still on the line Delta State will have to travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on one of the top offensive teams in the GSC in Ouachita Baptist. This will be the final conference game on the schedule and the guys in green need to win the remainder of their games with any hope of seeing postseason play.
The NCAA released the Super Regional II Poll on Monday with the Statesmen sitting at number eight. Only the top six teams in each regional poll make the playoffs. Delta State will have to win their final two contests and have some help from other teams in order to play more games this season. The postseason is a possibility if the green and white can go on the road two consecutive weeks against OBU and Lambuth and grab two wins.
First the Statesmen will need to combat a highly potent offensive attack from the Tigers this weekend.
OBU is second in the league in scoring offense with 34.1 points per game. Delta State is third in the GSC scoring 31.4 points a game meaning this could be another shootout. The Tigers hold a 3-3 record in conference play but have beaten North Alabama and nearly upset Valdosta State. As with every week in the GSC this will be a tough game that will take the entire sixty minutes to win.
Junior quarterback
Micah Davis is coming off of his worst game as a Statesmen throwing three interceptions against North Alabama. Those interceptions came when Delta State was behind in the game and had to pass late to try to come back. After the game the quarterback gave a passionate speech on the field assuring his team he would lead them to wins in the next two games. Davis will have to make good on that speech if the green and white want to have the chance to play for a national championship.
In the defeat running back
Trevar Deed had one of his best performances of the year going over 100 yards rushing and catching 6 balls for over 50 yards. In his last home game for Delta State Deed's father saw him play for the first time in his career albeit bittersweet. It will take another effort like that from Trevar and the rest of the rushing attack against OBU to control the clock and keep their high power offense off the field.
It is do or die this week with the chance for the playoffs on the line. There is no question that the game against Ouachita Baptist is a must win. The Statesmen do not need to concern themselves with anything but this week and the Tigers will be a tough opponent no doubt. Delta State will travel to A.U. Williams Field in Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on OBU on Saturday with kickoff set at 1 p.m. The radio broadcast coverage starts at noon with the Shelter Insurance Locker Room Report. As always the game will be streamed on GoStatesmen.com.
