Statesmen bats bash Boll Weevils 17-2 and 19-1

Cade Hoggard spearheaded Delta State 36 run offensive output on Saturday at UAM.
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The No. 19 ranked Statesmen (28-10-1, 10-3 GSC) of Delta State University combined to score 36 runs Saturday to sweep a doubleheader with the Boll Weevils (19-20, 3-10 GSC) of the University of Arkansas-Monticello 17-2 and 19-1 at Weevils Field. 

The Statesmen jumped out to a quick start at Weevils Field, plating six runs and batting around in the top of the first. Michael Niemann jumped started the Statesmen with a one out double to right-center. Josh Gordon followed with walk. After Niemann swiped third, Cade Hoggard delivered an RBI single to left to make it 1-0 DSU. Gordon came in to score on a wild pitch by UAM starter Tyler Henry to make it 2-0 DSU.
Rickey Ware walked and Will McGinnis drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Chase Blanchard would walk to score Hoggard and Chris Escobar followed with a two-RBI single to right to give DSU a 6-0 advantage. 

After a leadoff walk to Niemann in the second and the second stolen base of the afternoon for the junior from Yelm, Wash., Hoggard smashed a Tyler fastball to left to give DSU the 7-0 lead. 

The Boll Weevils scratched a run across in the second, as Michael Diffie drew a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to score Noah Sanders from third. 

UAM scored its second unanswered run in the bottom of the third on Brian Johnson's RBI single to right.
Ware's RBI single scoring Hoggard gave the Statesmen an 8-2 run after the fourth. 

Delta State took a 17-2 lead after exploding for nine runs in the fifth, powered by a pair of two-RBI singles from Escobar and Niemann, who finished the inning with three RBIs. 

Both teams went scoreless over the final two innings to give the Statesmen the 17-2 run-rule victory. 

Griffin (5-2) picked up the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings of work. Jeffrey Vance (2.0) and Nathan Hardy (1.0) also worked in relief. 

UAM's Tyler Henry (1-1) earned the loss after surrendering 15 runs, 11 earned, on nine hits with seven walks and a strikeout. 

Escobar went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead DSU, while Hoggard and Niemann finished with three RBIs each. 

The Statesmen offense kept the momentum rolling in game two by jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Cade Hoggard delivered a two-RBI single in the first and Niemann, Hoggard and Gordon helped plate four runs in the second. 

Delta State sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth, plating eight runs on six hits to go up 14-1. Gordon, Hoggard, Strack and Blanchard all delivered RBI singles, while Vinson connected on a two-RBI double and Niemann collected an RBI ground out. 

DSU plated three runs on an RBI groundout by Escobar and a two-RBI single by Blanchard in the fifth. 

The offense kept rolling in the sixth for the green-and-white, as the Statesmen scored two runs on two hits to go up 19-1. 

Jason Coats (7-0) worked five innings allowing just one run on three hits to claim his seventh straight win. The senior struck out three and walked two in the victory. 

Coty Saranthus worked the a scoreless sixth and Brandon Hall slammed the door in the seventh to give DSU the 19-1 win and day one sweep. 

Hoggard finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs in game two. Vinson, Niemann and Blanchard drove in three apiece as well. 

Joe Lamoureaux (1-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up two runs. 

The series finale is set for noon on Sunday at Weevils Field. The game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 11:45 a.m.
