MONTICELLO, ARK. –Coming back from a 17 point deficit, the Delta State Statesmen (10-10, 4-3 GSC) came back to defeat the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (11-8, 3-4 GSC) 72-65 Saturday, Jan. 29 at Steelman Field House.
Focused and determined, the Statesmen came out from the half ready to play. They were not shaken by the numbers on the scoreboard. Instead, they calmly chipped away at the score using excellent teamwork. Four Statesmen players scored in the double digits to prove it.
Marqueys Brown scored 19 points, the most points scored by the Statesmen, and he rebounded eight times.
Phil Turner scored 17 points, pulled in four rebounds and dished out six assists.
Arian Maliqi scored 19 points and rebounded nine times.
Jay Murphy had an all-around good game as well scoring 10 points, rebounding four times and dishing seven assists.
In the fist half, The Statesmen had a difficult time finding fluency on offense. They shot only 35.5 percent from the floor (11-31) and 20 percent from behind the arch (3-15). However, turnovers were not much of problem for the Statesmen in the first half as they only had four.
Fluency wasn't a problem in the second half as they shot 62.1 percent from the floor (18-19). They also improved their defense. Sergio Crow for UAM scored 18 in the first half, but the Statesmen held him to just three points in the second half ending the night with 21 points.
The Statesmen continue their three away game stretch against Southern Arkansas University Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the W.T. Watson Center.
