Walker's fifth double-double pushes the Lady Statesmen past SAU 76-50

CLEVELAND – The Delta State Lady Statesmen kept their home winning streak alive as they beat Southern Arkansas 76-50 for their 57 straight home win.

No. 30 Veronica Walker had one of her best games of the season scoring 30 total points—only five points away from topping her career best. She had 15 total rebounds, which also rivaled her career record of 19 rebounds in a game.

“I think she had a tremendous performance—one of the best since she has been here,” said head coach Sandra Rushing. “And the best part is I get to have her for another year. “

In the first half, the Lady Statesmen came out to play outscoring and outrebounding the Lady Muleriders. Walker intensely achieved her fifth double-double well before the clock expired in the first half scoring 23 of the 39 half time points and getting 11 rebounds.

Bug Cooper had six assists during the first half.

Southern Arkansas came hungry for their second win of the season, but the Lady Statesmen proved to be too much to handle. It took the Lady Muleriders longer then they expected to get acquainted with the speed and ferocity of the green-and-white as they fell behind 10 points with just 11:22 left in the first half.

The Lady Statesmen came out with the same level of intensity in the second half shooting 50 percent from the floor (15-30). They also shot 50 percent from the free-throw line which was a drop from their 90.9 percent in the first half.

The Lady Muleriders struggled keeping up with the hot hand of the Lady Statesmen scoring only 32.8 percent from the floor (19-58).

Southern Arkansas top scorer of the day was No. 34 Shenelda Levingston who topped off at 14 points.

The Delta State Lady Statesmen will put their No. 1 national ranking and 57-game home winning streak on the line as they take on the Ouachita Baptist Lady Tigers next Thursday, January 13 for the second in conference matchup of the season. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum.
