Box Score CLEVELAND—The Statesmen soccer team finished up their 2011 home schedule with a match against the University of Pikeville. The Statesmen, powered by three first half goals, came away with a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Delta Field.
The Statesmen (5-11, 0-4 GSC) scored a goal in just the second minute of the match. Junior midfielder
Steven Simmons scored from outside box. Simmons was assisted on the goal by sophomore forward
Eljay Allen, and senior midfielder
Joel Salazar.
Salazar's big game was only beginning, as he scored twice in the second half for the Statesmen. He scored his first goal in the 16th minute off an assist from Allen, and Salazar put the ball into the back of the net again on a penalty kick in the 27th minute.
Down 3-0 in the second half, Pikeville (4-12), got on the board in the 58th minute. Atiba Baptiste scored off an assist form Caleb Petry.
With their lead cut to two, the Statesmen responded with their fourth goal. Sophomore midfielder
Jonathan Boggus scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute. The goal put the lead to 4-1, which is where it would stay.
The referee was busy, as he handed out seven cards during the match. Pikeville picked up four of the yellow cards, and the Statesmen were booked three times. Simmons, Boggus, and sophomore defender
Joe Stockglausner were shown yellow cards during the match.
Junior goalkeeper
Flavio Romero played the first half for the Statesmen without allowing a goal. Freshman keeper
Sebastian Simota played the second half, and allowed just the one goal. Simota made a key save on a Pikeville penalty kick in the second half.
The Statesmen outshot the Bears 25-9, and took nine corners to just two for Pikeville. Delta State committed 19 fouls, and the Bears were called for eight.
The Statesmen will conclude their 2011 season with a match Saturday in Memphis, Tenn. against No. 21 Christian Brothers. That match will get underway at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Statesmen defeated CBU in a non-conference match 2-1 back on Sept. 28. CBU comes into the match as the No. 1 team in the South Region for NCAA Div. II.
