Box Score CLEVELAND-The Delta State University Statesmen took advantage of nine Lambuth errors in a 10-5 win at Ferriss Field on Saturday.
The opening batter of the 2011 campaign, Daniel Saxon of Lambuth, blasted Aaron Newcomb's 1-1 offering over the left field wall to give the Eagles (0-3) the 1-0 lead.
Despite not recording a hit, the Statesmen (1-0) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first, and had no worse than a tie the rest of the way.
After not scoring in the second or third innings, the Statesmen scored one each in the fourth and fifth, before scoring three in the sixth inning, opening up an 8-4 lead.
Patrick Taylor knocked in one of his two RBI's in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Michael Niemann.
After a pair of hits to open the top of the seventh, Seth Blackwell singled down the right field line, to bring the Eagles to within 8-5.
From that point, Tim Maloney and Garrett Pickens combined to throw 2.2 innings of no hit ball.
Pickens struck out four of the six hitters he faced.
Blackwell was the only Eagle with a multi hit day, finishing with three of Lambuth's eight hits. The second baseman also had three RBI's for the Eagles.
Taylor had two of the seven DSU hits. The catcher was the only Statesman with multiple hits.
Cameron Robulack and Kellen Bozeman each had RBI doubles for DSU. Bozeman was playing in his first game in over a year, after missing all of 2010 with an injury.
Aaron Newcomb (1-0) picked up the win in his debut for the Statesmen. The junior allowed three runs on seven hits, with six strikeouts.
Tyler Burke took the loss for the Eagles. Burke allowed eight runs, four earned, on five hits.
The Statesmen and Eagles will finish their three game set with a Sunday doubleheader at Ferriss Field.
First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
