CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Statesmen (3-0) completed a three game sweep of the Lambuth University Eagles (0-3) with a pair of victories, 11-4 and 15-1, on Sunday at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen combined for 26 runs on 21 hits in the two game sweep.
The Statesmen pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in an 11-4 victory in game one of Sunday's twin bill.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Hardin, as Daniel Saxon came around to score on a ground out by
Cable McMinn.
Anthony Even brought home
Hunter Palasini in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice RBI to tie the game at 1-1 for the Statesmen.
DSU would make it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by
Patrick Taylor (1), his first of the season.
Lambuth came right back in the top of the fifth, aided by a pair of Statesmen errors, to tie it up at 3-3.
The green-and-white would take over from there, outscoring the Eagles 8-1 with three runs on
Kellen Bozeman's two-RBI double and
Michael Vinson's RBI single. In the fifth,
Jon Carnahan's three-run pinch hit home run led to five Statesmen runs to put it away for DSU.
Tim Maloney (1-0) earned the win in relief for the green-and-white. The senior pitched a scoreless fifth inning after coming on in relief of starter
Brandon Hardin, who worked 4.0 innings and struck out eight.
Brent Hallmark (1) worked the sixth and seventh innings to record the save. The junior from New Hope allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Patrick Taylor closed out game one going 1 for 3 with a two-run home run, while Carnahan was 1 for 1 with a three-run home run.
LU's Eric Wilson (0-1) took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings and surrendering six runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Marty Roberson (0.2), Jimmy Cole (0.1) and McMinn (0.2) all worked in relief.
In game two, the Statesmen wasted little time in putting away the Eagles, erupting for eight runs in the first two innings. DSU would score in every inning, but the sixth, adding two runs in the third, four in fourth and one in the fifth.
Lambuth scratched out their lone run in third.
Jon Carnahan provided the big bat for the Statesmen, going 4 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Kellen Bozeman was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and
Will McGinnis finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs as well.
Michael Niemann wrapped up the game 2 for 3 with four runs scored.
Jordan Moore (1-0) earned the win for the Statesmen by pitching 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
David Mooney worked 2.0 innings of relief with four strikeouts, while
Nathan Hardy (1.0) and
Andrew Lytle (1.0) closed out the game.
The Statesmen travel to Pensacola, Fla., next weekend for a three game series with the Argonauts of the University of West Florida. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. while Sunday's single game will get underway at 1 p.m.
